ESC 2013 - Intervista a Gianluca Bezzina

Gianluca Bezzina, il rappresentante di Malta all’Eurovision Song Contest 2013, ci ha concesso un’intervista in cui scopriamo alcuni lati nascosti di questo medico cantante. Per questa intervista ringraziamo Daniel Danastasi della TV maltese TVM.

Ciao Gianluca, o meglio il dottor Bezzina! Come concili le due professioni?

Oltre a cantante e un musicista, io sono prima di tutto un medico. È il mio lavoro a tempo pieno e la mia vocazione. Mi piace molto interagire e aiutare le persone e allietarle nei loro momenti più difficili.

Considero la mia professione per lo più come una vocazione, così come mi piace interagire con le persone. Eurovision è un’opportunità in più in quanto mi permette di relazionarmi meglio con i pazienti e il personale. Quindi Eurovision ha reso il mio lavoro più piacevole. La musica è sempre stata parte integrante della mia vita ed è un dato di fatto che abbia passato il mio tempo libero in varie jam session con i miei fratelli e amici.

Ci puoi raccontare il tuo percorso artistico?

Sono un medico di professione,ma anche uno di sette fratelli, tutti i musicisti e cantanti di talento. Anche se pienamente impegnato in quella che è la mia vocazione professionale, la musica mi è sempre servita per prendermi una buona pausa, e mi ha permesso di trovare un equilibrio tra i miei giri quotidiani nelle corsie e la mia passione per la musica. Sono è il front man di una band locale, che è salita alla ribalta della scena musicale dell’isola grazie alle nostre esibizioni dinamiche e ad alcuni singoli che abbiamo prodotto. Mentre gli elementi funk e indie caratterizzano il suono distintivo della band, Io ,come artista solista, mi ispiro ad una più ampia varietà di influenze. Sono in gran parte ispirato dalle melodie di Michael Bubble, dal blues moderno di John Mayer, il nu-folk dei Mumford and Sons e di Noah and the Whale, mentre sono anche profondamente affascinato dalla musica cristiana contemporanea di Chris Tomlin.

Canto anche normalmente con il mio gruppo di preghiera e spendo molto del mio tempo nel fare volontariato tra i bambini di Torino, Cairo e Palermo, con le suore di Madre Teresa. Ho iniziato la mia carriera musicale suonando la fisarmonica, per poi spostare la mia attenzione a vari concerti di beneficenza in giro per Malta, inclusi i popolari concerti biennali Voices concerts and Rockestra, un evento annuale organizzato dall’Orchestra Filarmonica di Malta che si svolge sotto il Patrocinio del Presidente di Malta. È stato attraverso uno di questi eventi di beneficenza che i cantautori Boris Cezek e Dean Muscat mi hanno contattato con l’intenzione di collaborare. “Tomorrow” era originariamente destinata ad ad essere una hit per la radio, ma era anche un brano che combinava una buona melodia con un testo semplice ma significativo, che possedeva tutti gli ingredienti necessari per presentarlo sul palco dell’Eurovision di quest’anno. Non vedo l’ora di ampliare la mia esperienza attraverso l’Eurovision Song Contest perché sento che darà alla mia carriera un maggiore potenziale di crescita e di visibilità, e mi permette di avere ulteriori contatti con professionisti della musica straniera. È davvero un onore per me mettere da parte per un po’ la mia routine quotidiana, in quanto rappresento il mio paese a Malmö… sicuramente un’occasione che non vale la pena far aspettare fino a “Tomorrow”!

Gianluca Bezzina è un nome molto italiano, come molti altri a Malta. Il maltese ha somiglianze con il siciliano. Quanto è forte il collegamento Malta-Italia?

Devo dire che da bambino, mi piaceva guardare i cartoni come “Dragonball” o “Holly & Benji” in onda su emittenti televisive italiane. In realtà questo è probabilmente il motivo per cui ho imparato a parlare l’italiano.

Inoltre, molti maltesi sono fan accaniti di squadre di calcio italiane. In realtà, la mia famiglia ed io siamo appassionati tifosi dell’Inter FC.

L’Italia è anche una meta turistica molto popolare tra i maltesi.

Perché hai deciso di partecipare al Concorso Eurovisione della canzone Malta? Ti aspettavi di vincere?

Oltre ad essere un medico, mi piacerebbe anche continuare la mia carriera di cantante come solista e questa è sicuramente la migliore piattaforma a Malta per mostrare i talenti locali. Mi sono laureato come medico lo scorso novembre e questa è la prima volta che non mi sto preparando per eventuali esami, il che mi ha lasciato abbastanza tempo libero per impegnarmi di più in quello che mi piace fare al di fuori la mia carriera professionale medica.

Dorothy mi ha incoraggiato a presentare una canzone alla selezione Eurovison Malta. Abbiamo lavorato a stretto contatto e ci siamo aiutati a vicenda. Dorothy era euforica quando è stato annunciato il mio nome. Lei mi sarà di supporto a Malmö attraverso il monitoraggio vocale durante le prove.

Vincere è stato come se stessi vivendo un sogno. Semplicemente non mi aspettavo di partecipare a questo concorso per la prima volta e di vincerlo! Sono onorato di essere il prossimo ambasciatore di Malta all’Eurovisione. Io porto la bandiera maltese con orgoglio. Non vedo l’ora di vivere questa esperienza. Mi sento eccitato e ambizioso.

Come pensi di promuovere la tua canzone? Ti vedremo in Italia, come l’anno scorso Kurt Calleja?

Fino ad ora sono stato a Yerevan in Armenia. Mi sentivo molto a casa in Armenia. Le persone sono fantastiche. Sono rimasto davvero sorpreso che il pubblico sia sia unito a me nel cantare durante lo spettacolo. È stata una meravigliosa esperienza nella TV armena. Ho anche incontrato Gor Sujyan, il cantante armeno e Sophie e Nodi rappresentanti della Georgia. Sono entrambi molto affascinanti.

Abbiamo avuto una conversazione molto lunga e ci siamo scambiati un sacco di informazioni culturali.

Per il mio prossimo viaggio è previsto che vada ad Amsterdam nel mese di aprile per partecipare al popolare “Eurovision in concert”, sabato 13 aprile.

Per quanto riguarda l’Italia, accoglierò con favore qualsiasi opportunità che verrà per esibirmi alla TV italiana.

Chi sarà con te sul palco a Malmö?

Sono contento della prestazione che abbiamo dato nella Finale Nazionale con tutta la squadra. La canzone in sé porta a cantare insieme e la melodia è molto piacevole e orecchiabile. Detto questo la presentazione rimarrà bella e semplice.

Ti piace la musica italiana? Chi è il tuo cantante italiano preferito?

Amo la musica italiana. È difficile dire chi è il mio cantante preferito perché ci sono così tante incredibili cantanti e canzoni! Tuttavia, devo dire che non mi stanco mai di ascoltare la musica di Jovanotti.

Conosci Marco Mengoni?

Sì, conosco alcune delle canzoni più famose di Marco Mengoni come “In un giorno qualunque”. Mi è sempre piaciuta la sua voce ha un timbro molto particolare. Mi è piaciuta la sua canzone con cui ha vinto Sanremo,”L’essenziale”, dal primo momento in cui l’ho sentita.

Ciao Italia. I Maltesi sono molto contenti che l’Italia è ritornata all’Eurovisione.

Gianluca Bezzina, the representative of Malta in the Eurovision Song Contest 2013, gave us an interview in which we discover some hidden sides of this medical singer.We have to thank Daniel Danastasi of Maltese TVM, for his collaboration.

Hello Gianluca, or better Dr Bezzina! How do you reconcile the two professions?

Besides a singer and a musician, I am primarily a doctor. It is my full time job and vocation. I really like to interact and help people and cheer them up in their toughest moments.

I consider my profession mostly as a vocation as I enjoy interacting with people. Eurovision is an added opportunity as it allows me to relate better with the patients and staff. Hence Eurovision has made my job more enjoyable. Music has always been an integral part of my life and as a matter of fact my free time is always spent enjoying a jamming session with my siblings and friends.

Can you tell us about your artistic itinerary?

I am a medical doctor by profession, and also one of seven siblings, who are all talented musicians and singers. Although fully committed to what I describes as my vocational calling, music has always served as a good break for me, who has very adeptly found a balance between my daily ward rounds and my passion for music. I am the front man of a local band, whose dynamic performances and recent single releases have propelled it to the forefront of the island’s music scene. While funk and indie elements characterise the band’s distinctive sound, I draw on a wider variety of influences as a solo artist. I am mostly inspired by Michael Bubble’s brassy standards, John Mayer’s modern blues, the nu-folk style of Mumford and Sons and Noah and the Whale, while also being deeply captivated by Chris Tomlin’s contemporary Christian music.

I am a regular singer with my prayer group and I have also spent time doing voluntary work among children in Turin, Cairo and Palermo, with the sisters of Mother Theresa. I started off his music career by playing the piano accordion, eventually shifting my focus to singing in various charity concerts around Malta, including the popular biannual Voices concerts and Rockestra, a yearly event organised by the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra and held under the Patronage of the President of Malta. It was through one of these charity events that songwriters Boris Cezek and Dean Muscat approached me with the intention of collaborating. Originally intended to be a radio hit, ‘Tomorrow’s’ feel-good factor combined with its simple yet meaningful lyrics, possessed all the necessary ingredients to take it to the Eurovision stage this year. I look forward to broaden my experience through the Eurovision Song Contest as I feel it will give my career greater potential for growth and exposure, while allowing me to make further contacts with foreign music professionals. It is indeed an honour for me to be putting my ‘rigorous routine’ on hold for a while, as I represents my country in Malmö… definitely an opportunity not worth leaving till ‘tomorrow’!

Gianluca Bezzina is a very Italian name, as many others in Malta. The Maltese has similarities with the Sicilian. How strong is the link Malta-Italy?

I must say that as a child, I used to enjoy watching cartoons such as ‘Dragonball’ or ‘Holly & Benji” aired on Italian TV stations. In fact that’s probably how I learnt how to speak Italian.
Also, many Maltese are avid fans of Italian football teams. In fact, my family and myself are keen Inter FC supporters.

Italy is also quite a popular holiday destination amongst the Maltese.

Why did you decide to participate in the Malta Eurovision Song Contest? Did you expect to win?

Besides being a doctor, I would also like to further my singing career as a solo artist and this is definitely the best platform in Malta to showcase the local talent. I have graduated as a doctor last November and this is the first time that I am not preparing for any examinations, leaving me enough free time to engage more in what I like doing outside my professional medical career.

Dorothy encouraged me to submit a song at the Malta Eurovision. We worked very closely together and helped each other out. Dorothy was euphoric when my name was announced. She will be supporting me in Malmo by monitoring me vocally during the rehearsals.

Winning was like I was living a dream. I simply did not expect to enter this contest for the first time and win! I am honoured to be the next ambassador for Malta at the Eurovision. I will proudly carry the Maltese flag. I’m really looking forward to the experience. I feel excited and ambitious.

How do you think you promote your song? Will we see you in Italy, like last year Kurt Calleja?

Up till now I have been to Yerevan in Armenia. I felt very much at home in Armenia. The people are fantastic. I was really surprised that the audience could join me singing during the show. It was a wonderful experience on Armenian TV. I have also met with Gor Sujyan, the Armenian singer and with Sophie and Nodi the Eurovision representatives of Georgia. They are both very charming. We had a very long conversation and exchanged a lot of cultural knowledge.

My next planned trip is to Amsterdam in April to take part in the popular Eurovision party called Eurovision In Concert on Saturday 13^th April.

With regards to Italy, I welcome any opportunity to showcase my performance on Italian TV.

Who will be with you on stage in Malmö?

I am happy with the performance we gave in the National Final and with the whole team. The song in itself is a sing along melody and very pleasing the ear. Hence the presentation is going to be kept nice and simple.

Do you like Italian music? Who’s your favourite Italian singer?

I love Italian music. It’s hard to say who my favourite singer is as there are so many amazing singers and songs! However, I must say that I never get tired of listening to Jovanotti’s music.

Do you know Marco Mengoni?

Yes I know some of Marco Megnoni’s most famous songs such as ‘in un giorno qualunque’. I have always liked his voice as it has a very particular tone. I loved his Sanremo winning song ‘l’essenziale’, the moment I heard it.
