L’Irlanda partecipa all’Eurovision Song Contest dal 1965 ed è una delle nazioni più prestigiose nella storia della manifestazione. La partecipazione è curata dall’emittente pubblica Raidió Teilifís Éireann (RTÉ).
Con sette vittorie, l’Irlanda detiene il record assoluto di successi all’Eurovision a pari merito con la Svezia. I trionfi sono arrivati nel 1970 con Dana, nel 1980 e 1987 con Johnny Logan, nel 1992 con Linda Martin, nel 1993 con Niamh Kavanagh, nel 1994 con Paul Harrington & Charlie McGettigan e nel 1996 con Eimear Quinn. Tra il 1992 e il 1994 è diventata il primo Paese nella storia a vincere tre edizioni consecutive, mentre ha ospitato il concorso per ben sette volte, un altro primato assoluto.
Dopo il lungo periodo di dominio negli anni Novanta, l’Irlanda ha vissuto una fase di risultati più difficili, alternando qualificazioni alla Grand Final a numerose eliminazioni in semifinale. Nonostante ciò, rimane una delle nazioni più iconiche dell’Eurovision Song Contest.
Per la scelta del proprio rappresentante, la RTÉ ha utilizzato prevalentemente il Eurosong, finale nazionale spesso inserita all’interno del celebre programma televisivo The Late Late Show, alternandola in alcune edizioni a selezioni interne.
