Il Regno Unito è uno dei sette Paesi fondatori dell’Eurovision Song Contest e ha partecipato a quasi tutte le edizioni della manifestazione. Con cinque vittorie, è una delle nazioni più titolate nella storia del concorso e detiene il record di Paese ospitante, avendo organizzato l’evento nove volte, anche in diverse occasioni per conto di altre emittenti impossibilitate a farlo.
La partecipazione è curata dall’emittente pubblica BBC, membro fondatore dell’Unione europea di radiodiffusione (UER).
Dal 2000 il Regno Unito fa parte dei Big Five, insieme a Francia, Germania, Italia e Spagna, accedendo automaticamente alla Grand Final grazie al proprio contributo finanziario all’UER.
Il Regno Unito ha conquistato la vittoria nel 1967, 1969, 1976, 1981 e 1997. Per molti decenni è stato uno dei Paesi più competitivi dell’Eurovision, collezionando anche sedici secondi posti, un primato assoluto nella storia della manifestazione. A partire dalla fine degli anni Novanta, tuttavia, i risultati sono diventati più altalenanti. Tra le eccezioni figurano il 3º posto di Jessica Garlick nel 2002, il 5º posto di Jade Ewen nel 2009 e il 2º posto di Sam Ryder nel 2022.
Tra i risultati meno fortunati spiccano l’ultimo posto con zero punti dei Jemini nel 2003 con Cry Baby e quello di James Newman nel 2021 con Embers, che concluse la finale senza ricevere punti né dalle giurie né dal televoto.
Per la scelta del proprio rappresentante, la BBC ha alternato nel corso degli anni finali nazionali e selezioni interne, privilegiando le prime nelle edizioni più recenti.
