Il Belgio è uno dei sette Paesi fondatori dell’Eurovision Song Contest e ha partecipato a quasi tutte le edizioni della manifestazione, risultando assente soltanto nel 1994, 1997 e 2001 a causa dei risultati ottenuti nelle edizioni precedenti, secondo il sistema di retrocessione allora in vigore.
La nazione ha conquistato la vittoria una sola volta, nel 1986, grazie a Sandra Kim e al brano J’aime la vie. All’epoca la cantante aveva appena 13 anni, diventando la più giovane vincitrice nella storia dell’Eurovision, primato che detiene ancora oggi. Il Belgio ha inoltre ottenuto il 2º posto in due occasioni: nel 1978 con Jean Vallée e nel 2003 con gli Urban Trad e il brano Sanomi, che concluse la gara a soli due punti dalla vittoria. Nel 2008 il Paese tornò a presentare un brano in una lingua immaginaria con gli Ishtar e O Julissi.
La partecipazione è gestita alternativamente dalle due emittenti pubbliche del Paese: la francofona Radio-Télévision Belge de la Communauté Française (RTBF) e la fiamminga Vlaamse Radio- en Televisieomroeporganisatie (VRT). Le due televisioni si alternano nell’organizzazione della partecipazione e nella scelta del rappresentante.
Fino alla metà degli anni Novanta, questa alternanza si rifletteva anche nella lingua delle canzoni, con brani interpretati in francese e olandese, due delle tre lingue ufficiali del Belgio insieme al tedesco. Negli anni più recenti, invece, il Paese ha privilegiato l’uso dell’inglese, pur distinguendosi per la scelta di presentare, nelle edizioni 2003 e 2008, canzoni eseguite in lingue artificiali.
Dall’introduzione delle semifinali nel 2004, il Belgio ha raggiunto la Grand Final in numerose occasioni, confermandosi una presenza storica e costante dell’Eurovision Song Contest.
